The owners of the Goodman Gallery have arranged for their town planner to copy SAPRA on their proposal for a change in the use of the above property. (See update added on 15 April 2024)
It doesn't yet appear to have been gazetted by the City yet, but the proposal is for the building to be used either for a motor car showroom or a car lot. A copy of the proposal may be downloaded by clicking here.
SAPRA is attempting to get further details.
September 2023: We have just been informed that the Application to the City was withdrawn before it was advertised. We are not sure whether this was as a result of the keen interest shown by SAPRA or whether there were other factors involved. However, it is still important to be eternally vigilant to keep our suburbs from degrading.
November 2023: SAPRA has received notice of an Application now made to the City of Johannesburg for the rezoning of this property to permit "A 'place of amusement' for live entertainment, a jazz venue and general function only, subject to amended conditions". The Application argues that: "The Application represents a natural tendency to accommodate the needs of a dynamic and growing society within Johannesburg and it is contended that the Application, as proposed, will most effectively tend to promote the purposes of the City of Johannesburg Land Use Scheme, 2018, and should, therefore, be approved."
A copy of the new application may be downloaded by clicking here.
SAPRA had objected originally in 2023 and this document may be downloaded by clicking here.

November 2024: A Municipal Planning Tribunal (MPT) will be held (on Teams) at 12h30 on 12 November 2024 to consider the arguments for and against the application to turn this iconic building into a car showroom and car sales lot. The agenda for the MPT is too large to upload, but can be sent to anyone requesting it from townplanning@sapra.org.za
It would help if as many Objectors and other residents would attend.
April 2025: The MPT hearing foreseen for 7th May 2025 to review the application to CoJ for consent to use the above-mentioned erf as a Motor Showroom and Car Sales Lot has been “withdrawn completely from the applicant’s side as he/she has decided not to pursue it further."
August 2025: It would appear from some documents forwarded by Clr Truluck that a “dezoning” Application has been submitted to CoJ. Although it seems that the Applicant now wants to make use of the site as an art gallery, offices and a 250 sqm restaurant, there are some unclarities. Our town planner, Steve Baylis, has been asked to look into it and prepare a response by SAPRA. On the face of it, this seems to be good news, but aspects of parking and noise need to be addressed, apart from clarifying whether any building modifications are involved.
