Security February News 2010

Rosebank Community Policing Forum (CPF):
The CPF reports that December was a quiet month for crime and this is good news.    But be aware that criminals take holidays too and 2010 is a new year.   It appears that the trend shows an improving crime perspective generally.

Emergency Numbers:
Rosebank Police Station 011 778 4700 // Emergency on landline – 10111 // Cell phone (free call) – 112 // Anonymous Information Only – 08600 10111 // Fire&Ambulance&Metro landline 011 375 5555 or 112 free call on cell phone // Prime Media SMS Crime Line 32211.

Scams:

  • Criminals spot motorists parking and by standing close to the vehicles they attempt to hold the door handle as the motorist walks away and beeps the immobilizer.   The immobilizer is therefore not activated.   This was first spotted on camera in Yeoville and four men were arrested.   Watch that no-one is near your car when locking.

Any time you see an Email which says ‘forward this on to 10 (or however many) friends, sign this petition or you will get back luck, good luck, or you will see something funny on your screen after you send it, etc’, it almost always has an email tracker programme attached that tracks the cookies and emails of those people you forward it to.   Please ignore and do not participate.   The addresses are used for spam mail.

Warning from a Concerned Resident:

A resident gives the following warnings:

  • ‘Vagrants’ with trolleys who sift through the bins on Municipal Monday Pikitup Days appear to pick out letters and post and put that in their sacks.    Although they do collect paper for recycling, it does create an easy source of ‘identity theft’.   Shred your unwanted mail.

  • When opening and closing her gate she noticed a man sitting reading a newspaper facing her drive.    Upon looking in her rear view mirror she noticed him flashing something at the garage door.   This could possibly be an attempt to duplicate the code.    She has since had special receptors installed to prevent others from opening the gate automatically.
