2010 Soccer World Cup :

    Dog Poisoning:
    A resident in Newport Road asks that the public be aware of several cases of ‘2 step’ poisoning    He managed to get his pet to the Vet in time to save his life, but offers the following symptoms to look out for:  Lethargy; an appearance of being fearful; shivering; muscle spasms in the hind quarters and difficulty in controlling hind leg movements; inability to walk more than a few paces before needing rest, and abdominal discomfort (cannot lay comfortably on its side).   Please protect your pets against this scourge.

    Zoo Lake Sports Club:

    ZLUC (Zoo Lake Users Committee):

    • Environment Day – The ZLUC celebrated this special day on Monday, 7th June.  2010 is the year of Biodiversity & Development and invited speaker, the Education Specialist from the Joburg Zoo, chose to speak on Biodiversity to pupils from JanCelliers School.   Also enjoyed was a performance by a special United Nations Group illustrating the dangers of Global Warming.    The National Day of Biodiversity is recognized worldwide on 22 May and is a milestone for the preservation of diversity of life on Earth.   
    • African Axtravanza Exhibition – 15-25th July 2010 – 08h00-18h00 (1000 people)
    • Jazz on the Lake, Sunday, 5th September 2010 – 08h00-18h00 (5000 people) 
    • Booksale - Please support the Zoo Lake Users monthly book sale on Sunday, 30th June 2010, at the Lions Boathouse from 10h00-15h00.   Contact Nomsa 011 646 1976.  

    The ZLUC also makes an appeal to the public for any old books, magazines, etc, for the booksales.   All proceeds towards the upkeep and maintenance of the Zoo Lake.

    RHA (Rosebank Homeless Association):

    • The RHA is holding its yearly raffle for a handmade quilt.   The Quilt has a 2010 Soccer World Cup theme and will be a wonderful memento of a very proud time in South Africa history.  The tickets are R20 each.  Contact Penny 011 447 8540.
    • Winter is almost here and again the appeal is made for blankets for the needy.   There are institutions which house orphans (one has some 900) and help is desperately needed.   The RHA Collection Box is on the upper shopping level of the Rosebank Mall and collections are made regularly.

    Town Planning:  Applications:

    • Erf 496, 5 Elfin Road/59 Oxford Road, Saxonwold – Res 1 plus offices, subject to conditions, to Part Res 3, 85 dwelling units per hectare, and part Res 1 plus offices, subject to conditions.

    Gautrain:
    The Gautrain will begin operating with two train services:

    • The "Airport Service" is R100 for a single train trip to the airport.   All airport trains go via Sandton station.  
    • The "Commuter Service" links all the stations with the exception of the airport.   A single train trip from Sandton to Marlboro will cost R16.50, from Sandton to Rhodesfield R21.00; and from Marlboro to Rhodesfield R18.50.
    • Oxford Road should be reinstated by November 2010.    Bolton Road is expected to also be changed back to a two lane road at that time.    Baker, Sturdee and Bath are scheduled to return to their original patters by February 2011 and the completion date which Bombela suggests is by March 2011.
    • Single integrated train fares plus single bus trips will cost R22.50 from Sandton to Marlboro, R27.00 from Sandton to Rhodesfield and R24.50 from Marlboro to Rhodesfield.
    • Parking at any station will cost R9.50 for the first 24 hours or part thereof as long as you also use the train.   If you park and do not use the train, the parking fee is substantially increased.
    • Commuters will access all services by means of a contactless smart card – the Gautrain Gold Card. Cash will not be accepted for passage on the buses or trains or at the parking exit gates. The Gautrain Gold Card allows seamless transfer between Gautrain’s train, bus and parking services.  Gautrain Gold Cards will be available at a once-off cost of R10 from ticket offices and ticket vending machines at all stations as well as at selected retailers.  Value can then be loaded onto the cards on an as-required basis and the cards can be re-used over and over again to pay for Gautrain services.   Passengers also have the opportunity of registering their Gautrain Gold Cards at a ticket office which will enable the blacklisting of a card should it be lost or stolen.   Un-used value on the card can then be transferred to a new card. 
    • The train and bus services will operate from Monday to Sunday between 05:30 to 20:30. Trains and buses will be available every 12 minutes during peak times (05:30 to 08:30 and 16:00 to 19:00), and every 20 minutes during off-peak times. On weekends the train service will be available every 30 minutes.

    By-Laws for Pet Owners:
    By-laws were promulgated in April 2006 but came into effect in January 2010 to restrict the number of pets in households.    No person may keep more than 2 dogs/2 cats in or at a dwelling unit; 4 dogs/4 cats in or at premises containing one or two houses; 6 dogs/6 cats on an agricultural property or four dogs on or at any other premises.   All apply to animals over 6 months.   Regarding penalties for keeping more pets without a permit, the Chief Magistrate has not determined an admission of guilt fine to date but a notice will be served on offenders and a fine issued for non-compliance to a notice, which is currently R1 000.    Permits are currently free of charge but a once off application fee of R485 will be payable from July 1 once the Council’s new fees and tariffs are promulgated.

    Energy Saving Bulbs:
    Exchange points have been set up for SAPRA residents to switch their old energy consuming bulbs free of charge at Parkhurst Recreation Centre, Parkview Library and Rosebank Library from the 17 June for a max period of 4 weeks.   Click here for information.
