Security Alerts:

  • A resident in Parkwood was hijacked by the ‘Blue Light’ gang outside the Parkwood  Woolworths at about 8pm on Friday.    He was on his way home and turned left off Jan Smuts into Wells.   The police car was parked in the dark in the Wells Road parking lot.   They put on their blue light and stopped him.   They asked to see the contents of his boot and told him that it was against the law to do so without him by their side.   He was then attacked and locked in the boot of his vehicle and driven around for 3 to 4 hours before being dumped in Florida.    An identical docket was opened by a female resident in the area approx. 2 days before.   Although it is very difficult to know what to do, a suggestion is to turn on your hazards and proceed to the nearest public place or police station.   Do not get out of your car.

  • Two young people driving an expensive vehicle reported being apprehended by police on Oxford Road near McDonalds at approximately 10h30 on a Thursday evening a few weeks ago.   They were intimidated and traumatized and after being taken to an ATM withdrew R1500 to give to the officers.    They did not take number plates, descriptions, or ask for proof of identity and therefore there is little that can be done.
  • A second young man driving a BMW reported that he too was accosted by the SAPS on Oxford Road.    The descriptions given point to the same policemen in a marked SAPS van which was parked at the McDonalds.    He refused to give them money but also did not take any details or descriptions.

Please note that you have the right to request either the JMPD or SAPS to show ID.    In terms of the AARTO Act, the SAPS are not supposed to stop people for traffic offences, except if the driver is posing some type of danger.    Certainly evidence of any suggested speeding would have to be shown.    All SAPS and JMPD vehicles are clearly marked with unique numbers so that one need not look for registration numbers.    You are entitled to use your cell phone to call for help or advice, provided you are safely stopped.    Bribes should not be paid and you should ask to see a ticket if it is suggested you were speeding.

If you are tested for drunk-driving, the current legal blood alcohol levels are 0,05g per100 ml of blood for all drivers, and 0,02g per 100ml of blood for professional drivers.  For breathalysers, these limits may be described as 0,24mg per 1000ml of breath for all drivers and 0,10ml of breath for professional drivers.
